What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Abandons may wield powerful lead performers, but the flimsiness of its characters, lack of originality, and ultimately fervorless material makes for a lackluster experience.

Anderson and Headey give it their full commitment, but their characters are painfully one note. “The Abandons” doesn’t rustle up the interest that it should, and that open-ended final begs for another season. Don’t think I’ll be saddling up for it. Go to Full Review

This soapiness, I hasten to note, is not a bad thing -- it's good. It's fun. Headey is terrific as a woman who does bad things for what she only barely manages to convince herself are good reasons, and Anderson is giving Iron Lady badassery. Go to Full Review

This series is not a revolutionary reinvention of the Western, but it plays within the genre’s sandbox while also delivering our money’s worth. I am here for more of this series as long as Headey and Anderson are at the top of the bill. Go to Full Review

For all that emotions run high in the story, The Abandons takes a long time to warm up. Twists arrive, all of which you will see coming over the horizon in plenty of time to put the kettle on. What’s missing is a spark between Anderson and Heady. Go to Full Review

...The Abandons quickly loses the epic spirit seen in the trailer to plunge into the mire of a soap opera, more like old afternoon soaps than a memorable western. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Trevor W @TrevorWat 5h Picked this up because Cersei Lannister is a great actress; then saw Gillian Anderson as well, which kept me going! The acting is pretty darn good, but the writing is not. It is basically a David vs Goliath drama without any cool subplots or historical interests of note, and this series did not add anything new to that classic story arc. This does not hold a candle to other western series like Deadwood (goated). American Primeval is kind of like this show but also much better. See more Chris T 10h I'd heard it compared to Yellowstone so I thought I'd watch, and gave it 3 episodes. They share the alphabet for the title but that's about it! The characters are just not believable. Dodgy accents, on occasion but can't recommend! See more Elizabeta B 1d Exelent! I can't wait to continue.! See more Steve P @Steve53 1d I enjoyed it Some great dialogue and acting The chemistry between the two lead matriarchs worked well I thought A good degree of suspense action and twists For a tv series I found it quite compelling and some great swearing to boot! See more James C @JayCutler 2d Made it through 1.5 episodes and just could get motivated to watch any more. Shame because I like the actor in this in other stuff. See more Ladyrella A @Ladyrella 2d I loved it and can’t wait for season 2 See more Read all reviews
