Spanning three decades, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends -- writer Mary and lyricist and playwright Charley. Originally produced on Broadway in 1981, then becoming an inventive cult classic ahead of its time, the musical features some of Stephen Sondheim's most celebrated and personal songs. The 2023-2024 Broadway production, directed by Maria Friedman, redefined the show for a new era, bringing Stephen Sondheim's intricate score and George Furth's book to vivid life with extraordinary depth and clarity. MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG shattered the Hudson Theatre's house record on Broadway, solidifying its place as a landmark event in Broadway history. The critically acclaimed production won the 2024 Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical and Best Orchestrations. Additionally, in London, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG garnered the most five-star reviews in West-End history.

There are lessons to be learned from the modest goals of this “Merrily We Roll Along”: to bring a movie audience to the life of the stage and, in so doing, to those thorny stages of life. Go to Full Review

Yes, it feels stagey -- you were expecting realism from a musical? -- but the score is breathtaking, the lyrics scintillating, the emotions true, and as a Sondheim lyric has it, "that's the sound of a hit." Go to Full Review

Fandango Customer Frances 19h Phenomenal. I cried 3 times. See more Annie 21h the beginning had A LOT of close-ups which didn't feel necessary and felt frankly more strange/eerie, and the audio also only sounded alright/a little muted. There were not many moments where the entire set/stage could be seen, which would've been nice. See more Maya 2d It made me think about my choices and how it affects life. See more Sabrina 4d Fantastic filming of a wonderful show. Lots of close ups and the sound is great. See more Jason L 5d I had wanted to see this one for a while, but was not able to make it to Broadway. I loved this production. It was a little different with good close ups of the entire cast. I missed the first week of performances in the theater, but had to make it to the next release. I'm so glad I did. See more Isaac B. 6d Was surprised to see it was filmed like a movie, from the stage, vs. full stage pictures. I would have liked to see the staged curtain call instead of the closing montage. Very enjoyable. Great performances,. See more Read all reviews
