Buddy (Will Ferrell) was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa's elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn't fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.

For as much fun as Ferrell is having in every frame, director Jon Favreau builds a beautiful world around him. The two seemingly called in every favor to fill out the cast, and the wildly deep ensemble helps give the movie some extra heft.

This is one of those films that tries really hard to be family friendly but there's some real darkness here. Additionally, I found a lot of Buddy's behavior really annoying.

A few of the jokes in this film are really funny but ultimately I really don't understand why people love this movie so much. Buddy is a truly unhinged character and not in a fun way.

Synopsis
