Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) begins using Baxter's apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career.

This might be the apotheosis of American filmmaking. A script to die for, perfectly weighted direction, wonderful performances from all concerned and a delightful ending to wrap it all up. They really don't make them like this anymore.

Brilliant. Obvious why this movie was considered a turning point in Hollywood filmmaking. Great story, very well written and brought to screen. Whole stellar cast excels convincingly in character. Lots of intrigue, mystery, drama and flair. Well worth a watch

I can understand why this movie has often been said that its a turning point in Hollywood. This movie marked the death knell of Hayes Code. It changed cinema forever, and any cinephile should want to see this. Anyone that enjoys a charming drama, they should also watch it. The movie has a comedic start, a dramatic turn, and a very sweet ending that I was happy to have.
