What to Know

Critics Consensus

A family affair both on screen and behind the camera, Kate Winslet's directorial debut stacks the deck for tears a little too lopsidedly, but honest performances help put this drama's heart firmly in the right place.

To its credit, the cast works wonders with the little it is given, but that just isn't enough. Go to Full Review

Brimming with good nature, even in its more flat-footed sequences, “Goodbye June” wants us to know that none of these traits or familial currents are immutable — especially not in the face of a dying parent with a sharp tongue. Go to Full Review

A movie manufactured to tug at the heartstrings. That it does so this gracefully and movingly is a testament to Winslet’s understated stewardship and a script by her son, Joe Anders, whose manipulations are as gentle as they are affecting. Go to Full Review

...Goodbye June remains a moving film about processing the loss of a loved one. And, while it does have a couple of emotional low points, the actors' charisma and the focus on those left behind lend the film a solid foundation. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

David 1d Great acting, Helen Mirren at her best. Kate winslet also. Great story line and brought tears to my eyes. See more peter g Dec 14 It’s a tear jerk for sure but I sobbed and laughed from beginning to end! Great story, great cast (Helen, Kate and Toni) and perfect flow and timing! I put it in my holiday movie category faves including Home For The Holidays and The Family Stone. I am excited to see what else Kate and her son have to collaborate on together. See more Jamie A 4h There is a sentimental story here but told with a mix of humour and character profiling. Kate Winslet is amazing, as always. Her character has a typical relationship with siblings and they all come together for a tragedy. Very sweet and makes you cry. See more Shea S @Beebee6969 Dec 18 Finally a REAL Christmas movie. Goodbye June is raw, dark, hilarious and soul crushing in the most tender way. There is hardly any of that fakey holiday nonsense you get in most films released this time of year. I watched this in a nearly full theater in New York so that is promising for a movie this small. Everything about this movie hit home for me. It's an experience. I was moved beyond words and so was most of the the theater. Lots of sniffling and wiping of tears from the audience, but there is laughter as well, a lot of it. Will be a new additon to my yearly rotation. Highly recommend. See more Parzival 8. Dec 16 Just came back from seeing Goodbye June in theaters and omg what a beautiful film this was! Perfect for this time of year even though it is quite sad and hectic with all the family drama going on but… this film is truly a gem. It put a much needed smile on my face. Kate Winslet and her son Joe Anders have concocted a deeply personal story of family loss and grief and by god is it relatable! Winslet really kicked it out of the park with her ensemble cast. They were all brilliant and honest and truthful and that made them all more likable. But the again they were directed by one of the greatest and most talented actors of all time. She will be a great actors director if she decides to continue directing. And I hope she does. Cinematography is gorgeous here as well. 3.5 / 5 stars See more Robert C @RobertS82 Dec 15 This may be somewhat of a hot take, but I believe the critic reviews are somewhat low because of the nepostim involved in its production. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me since most movies involve nepotism. It may be a misogyny thing because I do not see DDL or George Clooney or any number of male actors getting the heat Kate W. Is right now, but I guess that is reflective of our world. In addition, Goodbye June is no vanity project. It is a deeply personal story tied to Kate and her sons grief over the loss of her mother. That is all it is and I'm perplexed people are making such a big deal about her son writing the script. To the movie itself, it is confidently made and Anders script is quite strong even if a little cliched at times. Kate's direction is thoughtful and intimate and the whole narrative just feels so real. The performances are top notch, believable, and heartwarming. Many people will relate to this film. Quite powerful and I loved it. See more Read all reviews
